What about paint. Is it important?

River City Aircraft Engines only uses genuine Lycoming paint or Continental paint as the base paint for all major components of the engine. Why not mix our own paint and save a little money? Lycoming and Continental paints are designed for engines and its hi temperature changes. We don't take any chances with the engine we build or the engine you fly.

Should your engine be painted as one assembly or paint parts before assembly?

poor painted engines1 When an engine is painted as an assembly, many hard to reach areas don't get all the needed coverage to last to TBO. River City paints all it housing and misc. parts before assemble to protect your engine for many years to come.

Here is a 2 year old overhaul, 300 hours with in house mixed paint and painted as an whole assembly.
Notice the rust build up between and around the cylinders, River City takes care of this problem by cleaning and painting each part before installation.

What is alodining?
Alodining is the chemical application of a protective chromate conversion coating on aluminum.
Why would anyone want to alodine aluminum?
It provides good corrosion protection. It even protects when scratched. Alodined 2024 aluminum withstands salt spray 150-600 hours before forming white corrosion. Untreated 2024 corrodes in less than 24 hours.
It provides an excellent electrically conductive surface. This helps to provide good electrical bonding in an airframe.
Paint sticks to it extremely well. In some cases, it can substitute for primer.
Advantages of alodining compared to other coatings such as primer or anodizing:
Adds no measurable weight.
Does not alter the dimensions of parts (does not make holes smaller).
Requires essentially no cleanup after application.
